## Pi Day is always on 14 March, because that makes it 3.14 – the first three significant figures of pi.

It was founded in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw, an employee of the Exploratorium, a museum of science, technology and arts in San Francisco.

Unesco’s 40th General Conference designated Pi Day as the International Day of Mathematics in November 2019.

Pi Day celebrations include eating pie and holding pi recitation competitions.

In the year 2015, 14 March was celebrated as “Super Pi Day”. It had special significance, as the date is written as 3/14/15 in month/day/year format. At 9.26.53, the date and time together represented the first 10 digits of pi.

### What is pi?

Pi, also written as π, is a mathematical constant approximately equal to 3.14159. It has an infinite number of figures.

It is defined as the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.

The earliest known use of the Greek letter pi to represent this came in 1706, from Welsh mathematician William Jones.

It got its name from the first letter of the Greek word perimetros, which means circumference.

William L Schaaf, author of Nature and History of Pi, once said: “Probably no symbol in mathematics has evoked as much mystery, romanticism, misconception and human interest as the number pi.”

Since it is indefinite pi cannot be represented as an exact fraction, but the closest approximation is 22/7.

Pi is found in many trigonometrical and formulae, and is also frequently used in geometry, particularly when circles are involved

### How do people celebrate this day ?

In the Greek alphabet, pi is the 16th letter (right after omicron).

Today is also Albert Einstein’s birthday and marks the anniversary of the death of Stephen Hawking (2018).

For many, the best way to celebrate the never-ending decimal is by eating its homonym. And coincidence or not, 3.14 mirrored or backwards looks like ‘pie.’
