This is your opportunity to join a British entomology start-up as part of a varied and highly talented team. The company are working to apply Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform agricultural pest management solutions. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Engineering, you will work on the further development and optimisation of a pilot automated production line for the sterilisation of insects.

What you’ll be doing:
In the brand-new role of Senior Mechanical Engineer (Automation), you will be making important contributions to the development of automated production lines. Your role will be hands-on and varied; you may be taking the lead on a specific component, sharing your expertise as part of a larger project, or working to troubleshoot and optimise existing systems. There will be numerous opportunities for personal development, allowing you to grow and scale alongside the start-up.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Handling and processing individual insect containers, designing unique components that will ultimately be incorporated into the rest of the processing module.
  • Contribute to the ruggedized production unit. The team have some concepts and prototypes, which you will make more reliable and robust.
  • Design and conceptualise new components, working with the team to develop these modules.
  • Testing modules and components, identifying whether optimisation can occur or if a full overhaul is required.
  • Collaborating with the team of Mechatronic Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and Automation Technicians.
  • There is future scope for international travel, as you install production units for a wide range of clients in the UK and Southern Europe.

What experience you’ll need to apply:
For this position, you will need:

  • A degree in a relevant subject, such as Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent qualification.
  • Hands-on experience designing and implementing functional mechanisms for automation, with proven experience in working on and handling small objects.
  • Experience in the design of high-speed automated material transfer systems.
  • Relevant transferable experience in the design of mechanical systems and subsystem components.
  • A solution-oriented attitude, excellent communication skills, and a team player mentality.

It would be highly desirable for candidates to have experience in the following:

  • Experience in designing components for systems that need to withstand manufacturing and assembly tolerances.
  • Previous examples of designing robust, ruggedised, and precision mechanical systems for 24/7 operation, such as conveyor belts, or automated packaging equipment.
  • Experience designing low power automated systems and/or equipment, such as animatronics, vending machines, automated food or pharmaceutical production.
  • Python/C++ coding. Experience with SolidWorks Software.
  • Working in a start-up environment.
  • UK drivers’ licence and car.

Please note, you will need to be comfortable working with live insects and working in a hot and humid insect rearing area. The insects and their growth cells are very small, so good fine work skills are essential.

What you’ll get in return for your experience:
In addition to the competitive base salary banding of £50,000-£100,000 (dependent on experience), you will also receive:

This is a full-time (37.5 hours) permanent position based on-site in Reading. Working hours are 9:00am-5:30pm Mon-Fri with an hour for lunch. Please not that unfortunately the client is unable to offer VISA sponsorship at this time.
