Purpose of Role:
The core responsibility for this role is generating interest and increasing participation in sports and activity including running initiatives and campaigns to inspire students and staff to get active socially and competitively. The successful candidate will work towards making sport more accessible to everyone and aim to help community members live a healthier lifestyle.
The current sporting landscape provides students with the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports such as; football, basketball, volleyball, dragon boating, cricket, badminton, table tennis and boxing. We are looking to extend the number of sports and activities that we offer to our students, and to continue to develop and enrich sport at the University and in the campus community.
The successful candidate will work as part of the Student Engagement team in the Student Life Division, working closely with the Student Council to manage the sports clubs and the Student Engagement Officer to deliver a range of activities and sports to the student body. The post-holder will lead and direct the sports programmes, manage and develop partnerships, and innovate and strategise to enhance engagement with sport and health for the wider campus community.
This post reports to the Student Life Manager / Deputy Head of Registry and Student Services (Dubai Campus).
Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the operational management of the HWUD sports and activity programme
- Leadership of colleagues to plan, direct and deliver an exceptional standard of services
- Develop, implement and monitor service standards including the operation of the sports clubs
- Adhere to all Health and Safety, legal and statutory requirements in setting and achieving standards of operation internally and externally
- Manage and monitor the performance of student club leaders responsible for individual sports, including the undertaking of performance development reviews and implementing team development plans
- Arrange competition, league and tournament entries for sports clubs
- Support the Student President and Student Council in furthering the objectives of the Council in relation to sports at HWUD
- Manage the budget for the sports for HWUD ensuring the department is operated in line with agreed budgets
- Develop and execute a Community Sports Strategy activating student and staff engagement with sport and healthy living and monitoring of key performance indicators
- Generate interest and increased participation in social and competitive sports activity for students and staff
- Seek opportunities to expand and develop the sports and wellbeing programme to the wider community
- Advocate for the benefits of leading a healthy and active lifestyle to staff and students
- Writing reports and proposals, creating promotional materials and communications for initiatives and campaigns
- Work with the Head of Careers, Alumni and Industry Engagement and the Business Development team to generate and advance business development opportunities in sports and health
- Support the Marketing, Recruitment, Admissions and Communications team with the launch and promotion of programmes related to sports and health
- Develop and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders supporting the work of broader Business Development and industry engagement initiatives
- Work closely with the Student Life team and in particular the Wellbeing team, to promote wellbeing for the wider campus community
- Support the delivery of Student Life and wider Registry and Academic Support initiatives and events, eg graduation, enrolment, student activities, etc
- Other responsibilities as assigned by line manager and the leadership team
Education, Qualifications & Experience:
Essential
- Educated to first degree level or equivalent or equivalent practical experience in the workplace
- Experience of working within a similar environment as outlined above
- Competent in the use of relevant IT packages
- Proven relevant experience in enhancing the student wellbeing experience, which will have been acquired over a number of years, with a basic understanding of the relevant theory
- Good knowledge and understanding of relevant legal, statutory and governance applications and turning them into good practice
- Excellent interpersonal, influencing and presentation skills, able to understand and communicate complex issues effectively
- Demonstrable excellent customer service
- Demonstrable ability to work quickly, flexibly and accurately in a dynamic, changing and pressured environment
- Experience of working closely with stakeholders across all levels of the organisation
- Ability to research, analyse and present complex information effectively with good attention to detail
- High level organisational skills with the abiliy to prioritise major developments and to function effectively in a pressured environment
- Demonstrable professional and proactive approach
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
